I've been following the Olympics, and there' been quite a bit of controversy about Chinese gymnast He Kexin (何可欣). From the blog entry by Stryde Hax:
"Her Chinese issued passport lists her birthday as 01/01/1992, 16 years old and old enough to compete. However, allegations cited on her Wikipedia page put her birthday as 01/01/1994, fourteen years old and not eligible for competition."
In his post, he uses the power of Google to try to uncover the truth, and it seems he's on to something. I've never been big on government conspiracies and all that, even with countries like China. So this post is more about how people are doing really amazing things with the power of Google hacking. I mean this is no joke, current world-wide news in the making, and armed with only a search engine and a free blog site, Mr Stryde is capable of poking his finger in the eye of one of the most powerful governments in the world. Assuming any of this is true. I had planned on saying more about this topic, but twenty minutes after mentioning this to a trusted friend who did some poking, the .cn website that hosted the documents went offline. Just like that. Which tells me Mr Stryde is onto definitely onto something. So nevermind. Forget I said anything. This particular Google Hacker has tapped out. For the record, I want nothing to do with anything this hot. I'm going back to hacking charities.

Although I've never attended a HOPE (Hackers on Planet Earth) conference, I've always heard great things about it. This year, I decided to submit a talk and I'm glad I did. I'm proud to be the final speaker on Sunday at 17:00. I can't believe I will be the last HOPE speaker EVER. What an amazing honor! Talk about pressure! I'll be doing my No-Tech Hacking talk, and it will probably be the last time I eer present it at a hacker con. Ever.

Vegas will be very different for me this year. I won't be presenting, and I won't be attending Blackhat. I'll be focusing on DEFCON, where I'll be neither speaker nor attendee. I will be a vendor. In all my years at DEFCON, I've only ever been an attendee (human) or a speaker. But this year, I'll be manning a booth for Hackers for Charity. Stop by if you get a chance, and buy a shirt or a sticker to help support the work we're doing. Also, please bring along any old software you're no longer using and we'll put it to good use for charities that need it. I will of course be on hand to sign books and chat, so please stop by and visit.

From my blog on Hackers For Charity.org:
"I’m headed back to Uganda, and this time it’s a family affair! Although we’re calling it a vacation, designed to show our kids the country that captured our hearts, We’ll be plenty busy. We’re hauling over hundreds of pounds of bags, pens and pencils to the students at Rehaboth school, and I’m planning on installing a computer classroom using gear and funds provided by our amazing donors. Click here (or on the image to the left) to check out our blog of the trip. We’ll be checking in every couple of days."

No Tech Hacking Released! |
|
Friday, 15 February 2008 |
I'm proud to announce the release of No Tech Hacking from Syngress Publishing! I'm even more happy to announce that 100% of the proceeds will be going to charity. In fact, each purchase through this Amazon like will feed an African child for one month!
What’s the story with the proceeds?
It’s simple, really. My proceeds from this book are going to AOET (aoet.org), an organization that provides food, education and medical care to children left in the wake of Africa’s HIV/AIDS epidemic. More than an aid organization, AOET aims to disrupt the cycle of poverty and hopelessness in sub-Saharan Africa through empowerment programs and job training, enabling children and adults to be self-sustaining, restoring not only their health but their pride and hope for a brighter future. A single book purchase made through my Amazon associates account (linked from any of my websites, or though http://tiniuri.com/f/Xpc) will generate enough income for AOET to feed a child for an entire month. Other retail purchases (which generate half as much income) will provide either medical services or educational supplies and funding for a single child through a donation pool set aside for those purposes. Why bother? Because I am called to “look after orphans and widows in their distress” (James 1:27), and I know from personal experience how mutually transformative it can be to take that calling seriously. Hamlet was onto something when he wondered, “Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them.” |

As the evening winds down this Christmas day, I'm reminded of the amazing blessings I've had in my life. I've seen my wife miraculously delivered from cancer, my family is in good health, I have been to Uganda with my wife in support of AOET, and I've had the opportunity to work with old friends and make new ones through my writing endeavors and speaking engagements. In addition, I'm absolutely blown away by the amazing growth of http://hackersforcharity.org. So many have taken a bold step in reaching out to help those in need, and I'm honored to play a small part in that.
Thank you so much for your continued support and friendship. It means the world to me. May God richly bless you in the new year.
All the best,
Johnny
